Literacy Volunteers - Winchester Area Programs

Basic Adult Reading (BAR) - One on one tutoring is arranged for students who have limited reading abilities and who are seeking to improve reading and comprehension skills. More Information

English as a Second Language (ESL) - ESL provides language skills to residents for whom English is a second language. More Information

Family Outreach - This program targets a multigenerational approach to literacy. The program teaches parents the importance of reading to children from an early age and incorporating reading into their daily routine. More Information

Computer Literacy - Students are provided with 15 hours of classroom, hands on experience, with the computer. The class provides the basics with the goal to encourage the student to continue work in this area and acquire greater knowledge for application into the real life world of today. More Information


Financial Literacy - Our goal is to provide two to three sessions each year on financial literacy in cooperation with Virginia Extension Service. There are four 2 hour sessions with emphasis on the basics and maximizing current financial resources. More Information

Northwestern Adult Detention Center - Currently we have an outreach program for the Re-Entry Program where volunteers meet with inmates once every eight weeks. Information on community resources is provided. We hope to begin a tutoring initiative in the detention center in the next few months. More Information

Northwestern Adult Regional Detention Center GED Preparation - I am enjoying the time I spend at the detention center. I feel I’m helping, it’s rewarding ….and the guys are really trying.” This is how one volunteer recently described her work in this program. We are providing classroom aides to the one GED teacher at the Northwestern Adult Regional Detention Center. More Information

Workplace Literacy - We are in the infant stages of developing the capacity to work with area businesses who desire to provide their workforce with additional knowledge and skills.

Citizenship Classes - We are also able to provide Citizenship Classes to those individuals wishing to become citizens.

Literacy Life Skills - This newly developed program takes one on one tutoring to the next step where a classroom setting is utilized to teach life skills to small groups.
